Coaching Essentials for Leaders
Brings the Power of Great Leaders to All Managers
SAN DIEGO, October 29, 2003 -- When people are asked
to think about great managers or great leaders with whom they've worked,
and what it was about them that made them so effective, the unanimous
response is that the most impactful managers and leaders have the qualities
of a great coach.
Quantifiable and measurable research compiled by Coaching.com—a
wholly-owned subsidiary of The Ken Blanchard Companies—shows that
coaching can drive improvement at all levels in the workplace, and in
organizations of all sizes. The studies reveal that Leaders who utilize
coaching skills have more effective teams, higher morale, and better bottom-line
results than those who don't. These leaders have high levels of retention
of key people, better customer service in their organizations, and higher
productivity. People remember them and their impact.
While more and more organizations are asking their managers and leaders
to be coaches these days, the dilemma has been how to help them become
more coach-like in their behaviors and actions. Coaching Essentials for
Leaders focuses on the development and practical application of core coaching
skills and a coaching conversation model, enabling leaders to become more
'coach-like' with their colleagues and teams. Through personalized, one-on-one
follow-up coaching sessions, leaders are encouraged to apply, evaluate
and discuss the effectiveness of their new behaviors.
Coaching Essentials for Leaders was created for leaders who seek to learn
and apply coaching skills with others in order to increase their effectiveness
and influence within their organizations. Coaching Essentials is dedicated
to increasing the participants' ability to integrate coaching into their
current leadership style. Leaders who go through this program will be
better able to utilize coaching skills to support others in taking focused
and purposeful actions that increase their productivity, growth, impact
and results.
Coaching Essentials for Leaders does not attempt to make leaders into
coaches. By focusing on coaching skills and a coaching process, leaders
are encouraged to examine their current behaviors and leadership styles
while including and experiencing how coaching skills makes them more effective.
Targeted to senior-level and emerging leaders, managers and others with
leadership or supervisory responsibilities, Coaching Essentials for Leaders
includes two distinct segments:
a training component to learn and practice the skills, followed by a minimum
of three individual coaching sessions to support and apply the learning.
Coaching Essentials for Leaders is offered either on-site or via teleconference.
Four areas are threaded throughout the training session: Coaching Skills,
Coaching Process, Coaching Practices, and Workplace Application.
“In some companies the extent of the coaching training is a change
in title on a new business card,” says Linda Miller, co-author of
the program. “Recently I was asked to come in and coach a ‘performance
problem’. When I asked what the manager had done to work with this
individual, I was told that although the managers in the company are called
coaches, this person’s coach didn’t have the time to deal
with the problem. It would be funny if it weren’t so common,”
says Miller.
“Coaching is a great concept, and its application to management
and leadership is obvious. Throwing a concept at something never helped
anyone, however,” says Miller. “Coaching is a discipline,
with fundamental principles and accepted practices. One of the most fundamental
principles is that coaches pay attention and are passionately devoted
to the development and best interest of their direct reports. Managers
and leaders can and should use coaching skills but it is ill advised to
ask them to serve as coaches without training. Coaching Essentials for
Leaders specifically addresses this challenge,” says Miller.
Miller, a Master Certified Coach (MCC) oversees all Coaching Services
for Coaching.com and The Ken Blanchard Companies. Since her introduction
to coaching in 1995, she has focused on the launch and expansion of coaching
within the corporate arena. Holding two Master's Degrees, Miller worked
for 12 years in the behavioral science field. Since then, she has been
coaching and training leaders and their teams, including Allied Signal,
Boeing, KPMG, WD40, and Insight. Miller is a founding recipient of the
Master Certified Coach designation from the International Coach Federation
and is a member of the National Speakers Association. She is currently
responsible for the development of the coaching infrastructure, development
and deployment of the coaches and for implementation of major client initiatives.
Madeleine Homan, Master Certified Coach (MCC), and co-founder of Coaching.com
and the primary architect of the Coaching.com Platform and coaching process,
coauthored the program with Miller. With more than 10-years experience
as a Master Certified Coach, Homan was an original advisory board member
and senior trainer at Coach University, and is a founder and former board
member of the International Coach Federation. Homan’s current responsibilities
include process and coaching content development, and the integration
of coaching within Blended Solutions offered by The Ken Blanchard Companies.
Prior to joining Coaching.com, she was the Head Coach and Project Manager
for a coaching initiative at a New York investment bank, which rolled
out coaching to support a new competency-based performance system to 2100
employees worldwide.
Coaching.com and The

the bridge from "learning" to "doing," and to help
drive personal and organizational success.
